Sunrooms
What’s the difference between a sunroom and a conservatory?
A sunroom is a solid structure, similar to an extension with a solid roof but with more windows. A conservatory is made almost entirely of glass, with a glass or clear plastic roof.
Which is more common in Ireland and why?
Sunrooms are more popular because unlike conservatories they can be used all year round. Conservatories are notorious for being too hot in the summer and too cold in winter. With the proper use of insulation and ‘A’ rated windows and doors a sunroom can be a brilliant addition to any home and can be adapted for many uses including; a playroom, an office or a place to eat dinner or watch TV.
Is planning permission required?
Generally speaking, not as long as the structure is built to the rear of the house, not visible from the road and stays within 40sq metres.
Advice for anyone considering getting a sunroom.
Don’t build it too small, think of what you will intend using it for and try to picture it full of furniture.
We would recommend a size of 14ftx 18ft or 13ftx 16ft.
Many people go for a Victorian style with five sides like an old 50p, although it looks great, this is not very practical. Placing furniture between these odd angles not only wastes space but doesn’t look well. Rectangular shapes are easier to furnish and cheaper to build.
How long will it take to build start to finish?
Between 4-6 weeks, depending on size, finish required, access etc. we can give you an exact time scale once we call and see what’s involved.
How much will it cost?
A typical sunroom of approx 14ftx 18ft will cost anywhere between €16,000 and €20,000. This depends on a number of factors including access, finishes, ground conditions etc. we can give a much more accurate quote once we see the job.
We would be more than happy to call and give you a free quotation for your sunroom or extension. We can also offer free advice on planning and design.
